I have this lens recently used very intensively for wildlife photography. Because of the surprisingly reliable image stabilization, I can usually do without a tripod. Therein lies the special attraction for me.
Whenever changing situations quickly, everything is in motion, and I must respond quickly, I am very pleased.
I use the lens on my Canon EOS 40D and the results were generally very good. Even at the weight I've quickly grown accustomed.
For ambitious amateur photographers, it is a genuine recommendation, just because you can get pretty often times the tripod at home.
When compared with the much more expensive lenses from Canon, of course (always in the same performance!) I could see the light of results does not really make a difference. Maybe in the laboratory with test images, but not in "the wild".
